Adventures in homeschooling

Fingerknitting September 2, 2010

Elle has learned how to fingerknit and she is really happy about it–can you tell?

Ever since learning on Tuesday, she has spent several hours in various locations contentedly knitting.  The first couple hours were full of her excitedly chatting while knitting and grinning from ear to ear.  “I just can’t stop smiling, mom, because I’m so happy that I can knit!”

I think it is reasonable to expect that if you have a birthday coming up, you will probably be receiving a ‘scarf’ from her.

Maceo already got his.

Yay for having another knitter in the house!

What’s her favorite thing to eat in the garden?

Where did she find this big juicy one?

Who found the cucumber and decided to take it all for himself?

I guess he loves cucumber too!

Workbooks February 4, 2009

L's workbooks

This is what we are using right now for more of the nitty-gritty.  L really likes worksheets, so these are great for her.  From left to right;

  • 2 workbooks from Grandma T, they have a lot of fun games and some letter and phonics stuff.
  • A kindergarten-level writing workbook that we got at the Learning post almost a year ago.
  • A new fun phonics workbook from Grandma D, it has a dry erase marker system.
  • A Pre-K workbook that has a lot of fun stuff, this is also about a year old, she has almost completely finished this one.

She works on some of these books at least once a week.  She also uses 2 composition books for practicing her writing.

Horses! February 2, 2009

I have decided, for now, to go with Unit Studies as our form of homeschooling.  With Unit Studies, you pick something of interest, it can be anything, like dinosaurs, the moon, colors, farming, transportation, really anything and then you come up with activities in all subject areas to explore the subject.

So, for us, L and I made list together of everything she wanted to learn more about.  Then, she picked one to start off with.  You can guess from the title of this post what she chose.  🙂  We plan to explore horses for about a month depending on her interest level.  But so far, here is what we have come up with for activities:

  • Reading and Writing: This one is easy, reading horse books and practice writing horse words found in those books.
  • Real life:  We will be visiting a real horse, hopefully of a family friend.  If that doesn’t work out, then I will arrange a visit at a local stable.  They can see how they are brushed.
  • Math:  Hmm.. nothing really academic, but L and B both get to choose out one of those little play horses to buy.  I will use that opportunity to have them count out money beforehand.  Also, we will be talking a little bit about weights and measurements as we discuss how much food a horse eats and how big the Clydesdale is compared to the Shetland.
  • Social Studies:  We are learning about the different jobs horses have had in the past and how they were important in agriculture and as a means of transportation.  We are also learning about the different ways of riding horses.  L is real interested in learning the terminology of riding horses.
  • Science:  A little bit of horse anatomy.  L got a great book at the library that shows the skeleton and muscles of the horse.  She is more interested in this then I thought she would be.
  • Art: Creating a stable/diorama for her horse to “live” in.

This is just a basic outline.  We are bound to come up with a bunch of other ideas as we go along.

In addition to doing the Unit Study, I plan to have L continue with her phonics workbook on a weekly basis, using the Starfall reading program on a weekly basis and bible stories study every week.  As for outings, we will try to make it to the Indoor Playground and the Library storytime every week as well.

In the next few weeks/months, I plan to get L started in some kind of class.  She has expressed interest in gymnastics, yoga and acting.  There are also a couple other free activities going on that I would like to attend as well.  So, our plan is ever-evolving but this is our basic homeschooling plan for now.

What we did last week

Since I didn’t post our proposed schedule for homeschooling last week (oops,), I thought I would post a recap of what we did do last week.

–Went to the Indoor Playground

–Library Story Time for both girls.  (B did *pretty well* at sitting still.  L loved it as usual.)

–Got about half of our homeschooling valentines done.  (We got on a homeschooling valentine’s day swap list)

–Read the story of Noah’s Ark (a few times) and talked about rainbows, painted rainbows and put together a puzzle of Noah’s Ark.

–Picked out a bunch of books about horses at the library.  Watched the movie Flicka, which is about a horse.

–Painted and planted a fairy garden from Grandma.

–Read and easy reader book about horses together.  Practiced writing words from the book–L knows the word ‘horse’ now and can read it and spell it by herself.

So, that’s it!  Not too bad.  We kinda got into a bit of a groove this week.  Hopefully that will continue!

First week so far January 16, 2009

So far, so good. We have had a nice and easy first almost-week of homeschool. We have done mostly as scheduled besides Wednesday library day and Indoor Playground. We got our errands done and by the time for the library came, it was just TOO cold. The girls (and I) had had our fill of freezing and we ready to just go home. Hopefully, next week’s weather will be a little kinder to us.

We have already cooked and frozen the pot pies. Now we look forward to making lemon bars tomorrow for Papa’s bday.

Papa and I both have a day of work on Monday. This is a rarity for us. We need to think of something fun for us to do as a family that does not involve the outdoors!

Things we are Thankful for:

  • Grandma T coming over to spend time with us today (and cleaning the playroom 🙂 )
  • Auntie L having  a successful 1st week back at school
  • B saying a new word “work”.  “Papa work!”  “Papa work!”
  • Heat, blankets, SmartWool socks and warm cuddly girls
